Cristian Gheorghiu is a popular graffiti artist around the streets of L.A. His canvas being L.A’s concrete riverbeds, brick walls and lampposts on which he repeatedly has sprayed his tag “Smear” – his nickname. He became a sensation in the world of graffiti – even being compared to Jean-Michel Basquiat – an idolised graffiti artist.
After being caught and identified for tagging the L.A neighbourhood Gheorghiu was issued with a fine and a jail sentence. It seems as his career was taking off his past was gradually overtaking him. A city attorney is now campaigning for a court injunction whereby Gheorghiu cannot profit from any of his artwork that contains his notable ‘tag’.
Whilst graffiti artists have had a huge influence on culture, art and music and are now becoming praised rather than punished, many forget that they are in fact committing a crime. This is because they are graphitising a public surface without permission.
