Chewing Gum Meets a Sticky End

Problems associated with chewing gum and stained pavements throughout the City of Westminster could be a thing of the past thanks to a new and dedicated service being provided by Westminster City Council’s waste management contractor Veolia Environmental Services that is above and beyond the contract remit.

Veolia, who is responsible for cleaning the City’s streets, has enlisted the services of specialist stain and gum removal company Community Clean to assist in this challenging task.  The two companies are working together to wash pavements; remove chewing gum from the streets; and clean monuments and stone and brickwork facades.  They apply a special protection solution called Magic Cote, which repels gum and other stains from the streets such as coffee, oil, vomit and blood, as well as algae and grime from monuments, preventing their return.

The use of Magic Cote provides a much more efficient and longer-term solution to pavement and monument protection than previous methods such as hot flushing, in that gum and stains are not only removed from the streets quicker, but the solution is much more effective in preventing their return.
